21:9 Aspect Ratio

No. “21:9” is often a category label for ultrawide displays. Exact 21:9 reduces to 7:3 = 2.333333…, while many resolutions sold as 21:9 reduce to a nearby—but different—ratio.

A family label can be useful for shopping, but the pixel dimensions determine the exact mathematical ratio.

Is 21:9 always exact?

Check a resolution in two steps

  1. 1
    Reduce the pixels

Divide width and height by their greatest common divisor.

  2. 2
    Cross-check 21:9

Exact only when width × 9 equals height × 21.

2560 × 1080

GCD = 40 → reduced ratio = 64:27

2560 × 9 = 23,040
1080 × 21 = 22,680

23,040 ≠ 22,680, so it is not exact 21:9.

Common “21:9” resolutions, measured

The label describes the ultrawide product family; the reduced fraction below describes the pixel grid. The difference column uses |W ÷ H − 21 ÷ 9| ÷ (21 ÷ 9) × 100.

2520 × 10807:32.3333330% — exact

5120 × 216064:272.3703701.5873%

For example, 3440 ÷ 1440 = 2.388889. Exact 21 ÷ 9 = 2.333333. The relative difference is |2.388889 − 2.333333| ÷ 2.333333 × 100 = 2.3810%.

Generate an exact 21:9 pixel size

Reduce 21:9 to 7:3, then multiply both terms by the same whole number n. Every exact size is therefore 7n × 3n.

2100 × 900n = 3002520 × 1080n = 3603360 × 1440n = 4804200 × 1800n = 600

If you must preserve a height of 1080 pixels, calculate width = 1080 × 21 ÷ 9 = 2520. If you must preserve a width of 2560 pixels, exact 21:9 height is 2560 × 9 ÷ 21 = 1097.142857…, which is not a whole-pixel value.

Use the main aspect ratio calculator for any custom dimensions, or the aspect ratio generator to create whole-pixel sequences under width and height limits.

Why the label and the math disagree

Monitor makers use 21:9 as an ultrawide category name. LG lists 2560 × 1080 displays as 21:9, Dell places 3440 × 1440 monitors in its 21:9 category, and Samsung lists 5120 × 2160 with a 21:9 specification. Those labels describe the products; reducing the pixel dimensions answers the separate mathematical question.

Cross multiplication test for checking whether a resolution is exactly 21 by 9
Cross multiplication avoids rounding: equality means exact, and inequality means only approximate.

21:9 aspect ratio questions

Is 2560 × 1080 exactly 21:9?

No. It reduces to 64:27, or about 2.370370:1. Exact 21:9 reduces to 7:3, or about 2.333333:1.

Is 3440 × 1440 exactly 21:9?

No. It reduces to 43:18, or about 2.388889:1. It is commonly categorized as a 21:9 ultrawide resolution.

What 1080-pixel-high resolution is exact 21:9?

2520 × 1080. The calculation is 1080 × 21 ÷ 9 = 2520, and both dimensions reduce to 7:3.

Should I enter 21:9 or the exact pixel ratio?

Use the actual pixel dimensions when you need exact fitting, scaling, cropping or validation. Use 21:9 when you only need the familiar ultrawide category.
