Portrait Aspect Ratio
An image has a portrait aspect ratio exactly when height is greater than width. With source ratio Rs = W / H, portrait means Rs < 1. A result above 1 is landscape; a result equal to 1 is square. Portrait describes a whole range of vertical shapes, not one platform ratio.
Which dimensions count as portrait?
Smaller width-to-height values describe a thinner, taller rectangle. Values closer to 1 describe a portrait frame that is nearer to square.
How do I test a portrait aspect ratio?
- 1Read width and height
Use the final stored or exported dimensions, W × H.
- 2Divide width by height
Calculate Rs = W / H without rounding first.
- 3Compare Rs with 1
Rs < 1 is portrait, Rs = 1 is square, and Rs > 1 is landscape.
Worked check: 1179 × 2096
Rs = 1179 / 2096 = 0.5625. Because 0.5625 < 1, the image is portrait.
Reverse the dimensions and Rs = 2096 / 1179 = 1.7777…. Because that value is greater than 1, the reversed frame is landscape.
The classification threshold is strict. A value displayed as 1.00 after early rounding may hide a small difference, so compare the unrounded width and height or test W < H directly.
Portrait aspect ratio comparison table
| Portrait ratio | Exact Rs = W/H | Relative shape | Exact test |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9:16 | 9 / 16 = 0.5625 | Tallest in this table | 16W = 9H |
| 5:8 | 5 / 8 = 0.6250 | Very tall | 8W = 5H |
| 2:3 | 2 / 3 = 0.6667 | Tall | 3W = 2H |
| 5:7 | 5 / 7 = 0.7143 | Moderately tall | 7W = 5H |
| 3:4 | 3 / 4 = 0.7500 | Balanced portrait | 4W = 3H |
| 4:5 | 4 / 5 = 0.8000 | Near square | 5W = 4H |
| 5:6 | 5 / 6 = 0.8333 | Closest to square here | 6W = 5H |
The rows are ordered from the smallest Rs to the largest. Every row remains portrait because every exact fraction is below 1. The displayed four-decimal values for repeating fractions are rounded labels; the fraction and cross-product are the exact tests.
Portrait is not the same as square or landscape
Do not label a square or landscape frame as portrait. A 1:1 frame has Rs = 1 and is square. A frame with Rs above 1 is landscape. The portrait threshold is strictly Rs < 1, even when a platform groups several shapes under one publishing format.
To verify a specific vertical shape after the orientation test, reduce W:H with the greatest common divisor or compare cross-products against the intended ratio. Orientation answers whether the frame is vertical; exact-ratio testing answers which vertical proportion it uses.
Portrait aspect ratio questions
What number makes an aspect ratio portrait?
For Rs = width / height, any exact value below 1 is portrait. The same rule written without division is width < height.
Is 1:1 a portrait aspect ratio?
No. Its width and height are equal, so Rs = 1 and the frame is square.
Is every portrait image 9:16?
No. Ratios such as 5:8, 2:3, 5:7, 3:4, 4:5, and 5:6 are also portrait because their width-to-height values are below 1.
How can I verify the exact portrait ratio?
First confirm width < height. Then reduce W:H or use a cross-product against the target fraction. For 3:4, the exact test is 4W = 3H.
